An Application of QCC for Material Management in Hospital ─Case of Cotton Material Management in Baby room

In the high competitive environment of medical services, the medical centers not only have to consistently improve the service quality in order to increase competitiveness but also have to control the cost by streamlining the operation process. The nursery station is the main place for the medical care staff to work, and also the place for storage of resources and materials. The nursery station provides appropriate resources and materials in terms of items and quantities, so its management is the key to the success of hospitals. The purpose of this study is finding appropriate packaging methods for cotton material which is for massive consumption material in the baby room and setting accurate usage amounts by the operations of QCC, in order that reducing the operation cost of cotton material and better utilizing the space of the baby room. By taking a famous hospital as a case of material management study, and through the process of QCC activity, the following performances are obtained: 1. Reduce the consumption cost of cotton material products With appropriate packaging methods and usage amounts, the monthly cost for cotton material products in the baby room has dropped by 56.65% (NT$ 23,800 per month), merely in a case hospital. 2. Increase the utilization of the space of the baby room With the application of 5S activity and the reorganization of cabinets containing cotton material products, the excessive storage of cotton material products in the baby room has been reduced, with an usage rate of 95%. Hence the available space has been increased. 3. Improve the identification and application technique of QCC Through the process of QCC activity, the staff’s identification and application technique to QCC is also improved.
