Compared with the careful and slowed down classroom English, English in real life is often connected and much faster. Such a gap often causes listening comprehension difficulty to students, even though they have studied the language for many years. This research attempted to investigate if an awareness of connected speech rules could facilitate the connected-speech listening comprehension of students at different proficiency levels. The subjects included the top and bottom 27% of three freshman language lab classes in Tamkang University, according to their English scores on the entrance exam. The two groups’ scores in five connected speech rules as well as their responses to a questionnaire before and after the instruction of rules were compared. Through such comparisons, the effect of teaching five connected rules on students’ affective domain and their listening comprehension of connected speech was discussed. The results show that the instruction was very effective in improving the subjects’ comprehension of connected speech as well as their affective feelings when listening to it.
