The study focuses on the effects of diagnostic teaching in length for the second graders. Moreover, it works to understand students’ misconceptions of length. 92 second-grade students in an elementary school of western Taipei city are as the objects of this study. The study was adopted singular group pretest-posttest design. The data including the pretest, posttest, and delayed-test, teaching videotapes, and the personal interviews were analyzed. The result shows the good effectiveness of diagnostic teaching to the conception of learning length for pupils. Some findings of the diagnostic teaching are as follows: 1.The diagnostic teaching of this study can result in immediate effects and good reserved effects on clarifying the misconceptions of length for the second graders. 2.There is no difference in the immediate effects and the reserved effects for gender. 3.There is significant difference in the immediate effects, but not in the reserved effects for ability. 4.The performance of length measurement is better than that of length conservation and length estimation. 5.Finally, the researcher offers some suggestions about diagnostic teaching and future studies in length.
