Action Research on Health Promotion at High-stress Worksite: A Health Educator’s Reflection on Action Shu-Chin Tung ABSTRACT The primary purpose of this study was to make use of action research to reflect on the processes of change and the production of knowledge at high-stress worksite. The author collaborated with participants implementing two health promotion projects during three years at the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park in Taiwan. With the issues of stress emerging in the author’s personal life, she started the learning action and acquired the frames of contextualization and inter-subjectivity. In light of such frames, the researcher inquired into two health promotion projects. One was a stress management program implemented from August to October in 2001,and the other was a health fitness program implemented from June, 2002 to May, 2003. The exploration of life and professional development was endless from the author’s perspective. Tentative results of this study were:(1) In regard to research method, the relationship between the researcher and participants was transformed from a ” subject vs. object ” relationship into an inter-subjective, sharing relationship; (2) on worksite health promotion practice, the intervention strategy was transformed into a student-centered, problem-based, empowering learning process, constructed by both the author and participants. (3) as to the change in the worksite culture, there was significant increase in the funding, in the number of health-related exercise groups, and in the human resources invested in health promotion; (4) and finally, the action researcher underwent profound change in her beliefs, values, and mode of interaction, collaborating with family members to rediscover her role in this world, which was considered a blessing from God.
