The purpose of the study was to investigate the relative factors between pupils’ problem solving performance and their reasoning ability for the high-grade elementary school students in Taiwan. The study was designed as a 4-pupils case study. Four non-routine problems edited by the researcher were used in this study as the instrumentation of the study. Each pupil was asked to solve each question in the instrumentation of the study to participate the interview conducted by the researcher. The data was collected by type recording, and was analyzed as a qualitative study. The findings of the study as follows: 1. Almost all of four pupils solved the question that was manual using the “trial and error” problem solving strategy. 2. Pupils had better performance using analyzing than using induce reasoning when they solved the questions. 3. High mathematics performance students approached to use more systematical strategies on solving these questions. 4. The cooperative learning used in elementary students’ problem solving enhanced pupils’ problem solving ability in the study.
