Popis: | 91 Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third generation (3G) mobile network, which evolved from the second generation systems such as Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS).In addition to basic voice services, UMTS provides mobile users high speed Packet Switched (PS) data communications that support real-time multimedia services (e.g., streaming video) and voice over IP. Thus, how to integrate the PS data services into the mobile networks has become an important research issue. In this dissertation, we explore the design and implementation issues for the PS domain of 3G mobile telecommunication networks. We first investigate the mobility management mechanisms for UMTS PS domain, and compare the mechanisms with that provided by GPRS. Then we elaborate on the differences of the mobility management and the session management between UMTS and cdma2000, and propose an interworking solution that allows PS data services to roam between UMTS and cdma2000 networks. In UMTS, the Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) provides the IP connection between the mobile network and external packet data networks. We elaborate on the design of IP connectivity for GGSN, and give examples to illustrate how these functions can be implemented in a commercial mobile network. We also propose efficient mechanisms for authentication vector management and for multimedia message multicasting in the UMTS PS domain. Finally, an analytic model is proposed to investigate the performance of the parallel Home Location Register (HLR) architecture, which provides guidelines for designing the parallel HLR system. |
