An Application of 'Panel Study of Family Dynamics' on Household Formation in Taiwan.

Taiwan families inheritates the Chinese traditional family concept, and hence have high percentage of young members to live with their parents. However, in the process of modernization, economic development and urbanization, the tradition is now changing. For example, economic development made family members separated, and modernization raised the number of family formation in urban. The extension of education years has promoted young adults leaving their parents earlier. Then previous generations, highly educated young adults are more likely not to adopt the opinions from parents in traditional family, and hence leave parent’s household. Haurin et.al.(1994)concluded that young adults leave their parent’s household to form the new household between the age of 20 to 29. Because of marriage, young adults form the new household, but now they form single family. This study used the data of Taiwan "Panel Study of Family Dynamics" to analysis the household formation of people from the age of 36 to 45. This study used binary probit model to build up the model in order to depict the adult’s home leaving choice, and bivariate probit model to build up the model for the young adult’s marriage choice and home leaving choice. This study attempt to find the factors that significantly affect the determination. The results of this research show that important factors include marital status, the number of children, the attitude of living with parents, living space per person, the ownership of house .
