Many studies have indicated that overweight and obesity affect health significantly. The purposes of the study were to explore the obesity status, weight perception, and weight control behavior of adults in a community and to understand their needs and barriers concerning weight control. Six sessions of the health fitness test were provided in 16 neighborhoods in An-Nan District, Tainan City. A self-administrated questionnaire was conducted to collect the information of participants’ sociodemographic status, eating habits, physical activity and weight control behaviors first. After the test, each participant got health advice tailored by health professionals. Six months later, all participants were followed by telephone interviews and their changes in weight control behaviors were recorded. Among the 757 valid samples, 38.2% were obesity (BMI≧25). If combining the standards of Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist circumference (WC), we found that 28% of subjects were in high-risk group and 16.3% were in low-risk group. The prevalence of obesity was high in the group of lower education and aged more than 45 years. High-risk obesity group undertook more physical activity than normal group, and most of them considered themselves overweight. For those who considered themselves overweight would try to loss their weight more. Diet control and exercise were two of the most common weight-reduction strategies. Still 10% of subjects have used unhealthy weight-reduction strategies. The follow-up interviews found that obesity people in stages of Precontemplation and Preparation were more active after 6 months. The major problems of people who stayed in the “Contemplation” stage were having no idea about weight control and having no time. It was concluded that future intervention programs for weight control in the community must consider the barriers of subjects, such as level of education, time and persistence.
