The Surface Roughness Analysis of Three Dimensional Polishing and Finishing by Image Recognition

This research is to integrate a recognition algorithm to identify rough areas on precision mold surfaces and finishing toolpath generation of such rough areas for automated precision mold finishing processes. The rough means the areas requiring surface finishing, and encompasses roughness, waviness and shape error. The purpose of this research is to reduce set-up time and alignment procedure with in-process laser inspection of surface topography of molds. The match area method is applied to find the processing area more exactly. GA can be used to find the suitable area more quickly than those of traditional method. Image processing technique has been developed and used to classify roughness data points into binary data and identify the area, weight center, the length of long axis, the length of short axis, rotation angle, and orientation of rough areas. The geometric properties of each identified area, such as square, rectangle, circle, rhombus, and ellipse can be classified and reference those data to setup the parameters in Mastercam software and then produce finishing toolpath. From the experiment results, the research technique can be applied to improve the surface precision of polishing and finishing.
