A Study on the Comparison of Development Tools for Database Applications

| Popis: | 90 The effective use of development tools for database application programs is crucial to the process of developing database application programs. As the Information Technology evolving the growth of development tools for database application programs is dramatically, which towards standard, operational independent, and platform independent.This research focuses on comparing and analyzing the usage and functionality of the development tools for database application programs. The process of our study is divided into two phases: first, base on the elaborately design questionary to survey, in both software industry and education organizations,the current situation of the usage of database application development tools and what the users/programs do need to find out how development tools are used in. The second phase is, based on the results of survey, to compare three major development tools -- Visual Basic, Powerbuilder and Magic, to see if these tools meet the requirements of the users. The results of this study may serve as a reference for future development selection of tools.The research shows that the most popular development tool choised by education organizations is Visual Basic, while for software industry, the most popular one is Powerbuilder; the most popular database management system is Microsoft-SQL. But when it comes to user satisfaction of development tools, Powerbuilder is slightly higher than Visual Basic. Regarding the factors for choosing a development tool for database application programs in education organizations functionality is of highest rank, followed by performance and price; while in software industry, the most important factor still goes to functionality, the second to price, and the third to cross-platform supporting. Based on our survey, we have a list of twenty most important features for selecting a development tool. By using this list, we compare the characteristics of Visual Basic, Powerbuilder and Magic. The comparison shows that both Powerbuilder and Magic have similar outcome in terms of functionality and preference, and both are much better than Visual Basic. |
