A probabilistic cumulative damage model originally proposed by Bogdanoff and Kozin is used in the present study to describe the fatigue crack propagation of a batch of specimens made of 2024-T351 aluminum alloy. The scatter of the fatigue crack propagation curves in addition to their mean growth trend is emphasized in particular. The physical ground for using the model is that fatigue crack propagation can be considered a cumulative damage process that, in turn, can be described by a Markov chain. Under such consideration, simple formulas can be used to describe the fatigue-related reliability. The model can easily be extended to take into account any fatigue crack propagation law. Through verification of fatigue crack propagation data, it is found that the present model can indeed be used to describe the fatigue reliability of the test data.
