The research is dealing with the study of the flow field of a water circulation system in the condenser of a thermal power plant. Special attention is given to the occurrence of the rupture problems of grid bars. Those are main members of ball collection strainers in the condenser of thermal power plants. The problem of failure of grid bars has been found from units 5-8 of the power plant located at Taichung. This is, perhaps, due to the occurrence of induced vibration produced by the water flow. The method of finite element is employed to study the water flow field that flows through a L-pipe in the condenser. The results then are compared with those obtained from experiments. Results of this study show that due to the existence of unexpected high speed of flow, excessive drag forces acting on grid bars occur. In addition, the results also indicate that unexpected distribution of non-uniform velocity over the grid bars occurs when the water flows over the L-pipe. The results of this study also show that under the condition when the average velocity at the entrance is 0.65m/s with the total flow rate being 6m3/s,the maximum flow speed can reach 3.4m/s at the region of fracture. This is the main cause of producing excessive drag forces and stresses.
