The first step is to realize the morphology of river when study the regime or transition of river channel. The hydraulic characteristics of channel type including of channel width, hydraulic depth, mean velocity and discharge etc. are the basic parameters in river planning and controlling. This study is to research the relationship of hydraulic characteristics and channel type and set up the development of river channel with increasing discharge. And the results maybe offer some suggestions for engineers as reference. This research collects the hydrology and geography data from the hydrologic station in the Lan-Yang River and Zeng-Wen River. Using the cross section data and HEC-RAS software, it can also estimate the hydraulic parameters of the stream which isn’t established the hydrologic station. These data can estimate the hydraulic geometry exponents and analysis their variations with different discharge through top width, depth and mean velocity. According to the triangular coordinate system plotted by hydraulic geometry exponents, we can distinguish the stream type and the cross section characteristics with increasing discharge. To study the regime and development of the river, they could be divided into several sections which possess their hydraulic parameters in bankfull discharge. The preliminary results of evolution of river type along stream longitudinal axis through this research.
