Theory and Practice of Multimedia Teaching in Language Lab: A Case Study of the Foreign Language Faculty in Fu-Jen Catholic University

There is no doubt that audio-visual aids and multimedia have played an important role in teaching and learning foreign languages. By using these technology equipments in teaching, students can learn more, fast and effective. The study aims to conduct an exploratory investigation to gain a better understanding of the present case of the use of multimedia language lab in foreign language learning and teaching. The study was conducted at the multimedia language lab C (MLLC) of College of Foreign Languages in Fu-Jen. The participants are experienced teachers of the MLLC, and through the data analysis of questionnaires to them, we know which functions of the MLLC are used least and which are used most. Also, through the interview, the real teaching situation in the MLLC is observed. Based on the result of the questionnaires and interviews, the main findings of this study can be divided into three, one for the MLLC, one for administration management and the last for the manufacturer. Because the functions of MLLC are used mostly for instructing students, other functions such as library, index and editors are neglected or ignored from some reasons. In this case, we can say the MLLC is utilized inefficiently. Since we like to use technology and believe in its value, we must find strategies to help faculty learn to use it successfully. How to make full use of MLLC, there are some findings and suggestions for school administration and the manufacturer- (Sony). I hope that this thesis may have some contributions to the teaching and the learning in the multimedia language lab. Also, making full use of language lab, the environment of the learning foreign languages can be made livelier and more dynamic.
