Measurement of Undrained Stiffness Modulus of Taipei Silty Clay at Small Strain

The traditional triaxial test, restrained by the instrumental precision and the inaccuracy of measurement during the test, can hardly obtain the characteristics of the initial stiffness and non-linearity of soils at small strain. This study aims to understand the characteristics of the Taipei silty clay at small strain.The automatized triaxial apparatus manufactured by the English corporation GDS is to eliminate the inaccuracy generated by a traditional triaxial apparatus. GDS triaxial cell is further modified to accommodate the small strain measurement system which consists of a gap sensor of high precision and a pair of bender elements for generating seismic wave, to increase the degree of measurement precision. A series of triaxial K0-consolidated undrained ( ) and bender element tests were conducted. Test results indicate that the Taipei silty clay has a high of initial stiffness and highly non-linear behavior at small strain. Besides, the results determined from this test device are similar to those from dynamic triaxial tests.
