The objective of this study is to investigate the solid-liquid equilibrium (SLE)behavior for the mixtures, which are related to the separation of closely boiling mixtures containing phenol derivatives by means of extractive crystallization. The mixtures to be separated are 4-methoxyphenol/catechol and 2-methoxyphenol/1,2-dimethoxybenzene. p-Cresol or diphenylmethane was used as an auxiliary agent. The SLE data were measured with solid-disappearance method for various binary and ternary mixtures. The results showed that there were no complex formations in any of the mixtures and thus these mixtures behaved as simple eutectic systems. Ternary SLE phase diagrams were constructed on the basis of the experimental results. With the aid of these phase diagrams, feasible processes were proposed to separate the closely boiling mixtures via extractive crystallization. The binary SLE data were correlated with the NRTL and the Wilson models. The optimal values of the model parameters were also determined. In general, the Wilson model yielded better results than the NRTL. With the parameters obtained from binary data, the models predicted the SLE properties of the ternary systems to within reasonable accuracy.
