Based on literature reviews and researcher''s clinical experience, we drew up “Coping Strategies Scale for Patients with Schizophrenia”. The purposes of this study were to develop the coping strategies scale for patients with schizophrenia and to construct the reliability and validity of the scale. We intended to identify the coping strategies of patients with schizophrenia by this study. The scale was revised after expert view and pilot testing. This study included 111 schizophrenic patients who were followed up at outpatient clinic of a teaching hospital in northern Taiwan by purposive sampling. We developed structured questionnaires to collect data through schizophrenic patients’ self-report. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The “Coping Strategies Scale for Patients with Schizophrenia” was an effective instrument in evaluating schizophrenic patients’ coping strategies when facing stress. The questionnaires factored into six: “negative emotion”, “positive cognition”, “escape and procrastination”, “looking for dependence, either physiological or psychological”, “positive emotion”, and “previous illness experience”. 2. The “Coping Strategies Scale for Patients with Schizophrenia” was evaluated by test-retest reliability and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients. The stability and internal consistency of the scale were rather good. 3. The “Coping Strategies Scale for Patients with Schizophrenia” was tested using expert validity, item analysis, and factor analysis. The content validity and construct validity of the scale were rather good. According to these findings, suggestions to medical clinical workers and inspiration to further studies were offered in this dissertation.
