Application of INTERNET in Tourism Development ─A Case Study of Nan-Tou Travel Site

After the Chi-Chi earthquake in 1999, the tourism market in central Taiwan has dropped sharply. Given that mass media is esential to tourism marketing, convenient and economic tool for communication should be utilized. This research is to promote the tourism industry in disaster area by utilizing the multi-broadcast and unbounded electronic media, INTERNET. Nan-Tou travel site, which was founded in 1998, is targeted in this research. INTERNET can provide updated traffic and road reports in real time. Besides, it can educate people about earthquake so that people would be better aware of destination information. The main purpose of this research is to improve the application of tourism industries in order to reconstruct the economy in Nan-Tou. After reviewing ten featuring travel web sites, critical success factors are concluded as follows: Low price product, association of tourism, enhancement of efficiency and synchronization in operating procedure among tourism travel industries, providing convenient exchange process, and numerous and diversified and rich information etc.. Nevertheless, the success factors during initial development that the Nan-Tou tourism focuses on are the diversified and sufficient information, high interactive and high frequent updated information, the passionate participation of high level managers, the association of tourism, and combination in tourism markets. Compared to other new travel web sites, Nan-Tou touring industries only have two similar critical success factors, which are the numerous and sufficient information and the association of tourism. That means that Nan-Tou touring industries do not have absolute advantages in expanding new tourism marketing; nonetheless, Nan-Tou touring industries enjoy obvious advantages in the combination of media marketing and the development and support plan from government. Major conclusion and recommendation to Nan-Tou tourism development are summarized as follows: 1.Travel agencies (or travel web site builders) should have to contain of the capabilities in producing, planing and embellishing traveling products. 2.Travel agencies should not perpare travel plans alone, and they should join with other related agencies and media take advantage of common resource. 3.Travel industries should utilized the application of e-commerce for marketing.. 4.Conventional medium should be continued. However, virtual and real-world service systems should br intergrated to add value of products.
