The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of protein and cholesterol on blood pressure and lipid metabolism in Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Experiment I was conducted with the principal objective of understanding the different protein sources, as well as the effects of cholesterol supplementation on the blood pressure and lipid metabolism in SHR. Fifty male SHR were divided into six groups : (A)Casein (B)SPI (C) Non-fat mackerel meat (D) Casein +cholesterol (E)SPI + cholesterol (F) Non-fat mackerel meat + cholesterol. Results of showed that there was no significant different in weight changes. Systolic blood pressure was significantly lower in SHR fed with (B), (C), (E) and (F) when compared with SHR fed (A) and (D) at the end of the feeding period. After taking (E), SHR has the lowest plasma total cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid. After cholesterol was added to (B) and (C), that significantly reduction of the VLDL-C. There was no significant different in the plasma and kidney angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Cholesterol supplementation of (B) or (C), that significantly reduction of the lung angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). After experiment I, in order to investigate the relation between 1% salt intake and blood pressure, thirty one male SHR were divided into four groups : (A)Casein (B)SPI (C)Non-fat mackerel meat diet (D) Mackerel diet. Results showed that there was no significant different in the weight. (B), (C) and (D) that has lower 1% salt intake than (A). Systolic blood pressure was significantly lower in SHR fed (B), (C) and (D) when compared with SHR fed (A) at the end of the feeding period. After taking (B), SHR has lower plasma total cholesterol and phospholipid. SHR fed (D) have lower VLDL-C levels when compared with that fed (A). There was no significant different in the plasma and kidney angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). (B), (C) and (D) that significantly reduction of the lung angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Result from these experiments showed that different protein diet may have different effect on blood pressure and lipid metabolism in SHR.
