Calanthe formosana Rolfe, a terrestrial and native orchid species in Taiwan, distributes widely in the mountain area below the 1500 m in altitude in the Southern and Northern Taiwan. The habitat characteristics was not significantly different among 8 geographic area studied. Its habitat in Northern Taiwan is warm, humid and partly closed environment. The soil pH for its growth habitat ranged from 5.9 to 6.5. The average soil moisture content ranged between 24% to 38%, and the average soil organic matter content ranged from 8% to 20 %. Totally 168 plant species was present study area and 38 species was present in every site. Cluster analysis and relative dominance of species revealed that the vegetations in the studied area could be classified into 6 groups. However, based on the population structure, the population’s distribution pattern could be classified into 3 types, and the pattern was correlated with terrains and slope. Vegetation cluster was not correlated with the population size and altitude. The coverage of crown and surface ground cover were not significantly different among the study area. Nine of 100 10-bp random primers produced 57 polymorphism loci in the 132 plants collected from 8 sites. Most of the genetic variation was partitioned within populations. In every site, 2-8 phylogenetic tree clusters could be identified. The genetic relatedness among populations was correlated with vegetation compositions but not with geographic distribution.
