Knowledge of the frequency-dependent impedance of rail tracks plays an important role in transient and harmonic analyses of traction power systems. Because of its irregular cross section shape and ferromagnetic property, the calculation of rail impedance can only be carried out with numerical technique such as finite element method, and no analytical method is available. This thesis proposes a novel four-parameter conductor model applicable to the calculation of rail impedances. The four parameters of the proposed model are obtained from results of the finite element method. The four-parameter conductor model allows methods for calculating frequency-dependent parameters of transmission lines, such as the Carson’s method and the complex depth of penetration method, to be applicable to rail conductors. One of the most important contributions of the proposed model is that it enables theories that were valid only for traditional power systems, to be applicable to the railway power systems. This thesis also proposes an equivalent circuit model of the rail group that allows time domain simulation of rail circuit to take into account the frequency- dependent characteristics of the rail impedances.
