The behavior of using utensils is influenced, more or less, by situations. In addition, the utensil that is used to satisfy a user’s drinking behavior must fit the situation where the behavior occurs. From the viewpoint of situations, the objective of this research is to construct a causal model among the shapes of utensils, situations, and the adverbial images used to describe users’ behavior, using mugs as examples. This model will be useful in utensil design. This research consists of four parts. First, we will investigate the drinking situations of mugs and classify these situations via cluster analysis. Second, after analyzing the shapes of a collection of mugs, we construct computer models of sample mugs that are selected according to experimental design. The adverbial images will be tested in different types of drinking situations. Using Principal Components Analysis and Regression Analysis, we obtain the relationship between the adverbial images and the shapes of mugs. The relationship between the adverbial images and the compound values, i.e., the usefulness and the want, is also derived. Third, ANOVA will be conducted to compare the differences in images’ cognition across different situations. Then, we use the method of ‘Quantification I’ to analyze the causal relationship between the adverbial images and the shapes of mugs. Last, several causal models are developed to express the relationships among the shapes of utensils, the drinking situations, and the adverbial images. By examining the results of Structural Equation Modeling, we select the most suitable model in each drinking situation.
