Popis: | 88 This thesis aims to explore the idea of deliberative democracy. Chapter 1 deals with the origin of the idea of deliberative democracy, and tries to delineate its relationship with the tradition of western political theory. These preliminary remarks serve to sketch 3 essential problems which deliberative democracy must be capable of answering: (1) If representative democracy is unavoidable in the context of modern society, how will deliberative democracy explain its role in political life? (2) How to face the problem of silent majority, or the unreflective mass? (3) In a plural society, how is ''common good'' or ''general will'' ever possible? Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 deal with Joshua Cohen''s and Seyla Benhabib''s theories of deliberative democracy respectively. Since they construct their theories on the foundation of John Rawls''s, Jurgen Habermas''s, and Hannah Arendt''s theories, these 2 chapters also try to clarify the implications of these theories have on deliberative democracy. In Chapter 4, I combine Benhabib''s and Cohen''s theories so as to offer a thoroughly definition of deliberative democracy. Because Benhabib and Cohen didn''t provide the detailed institutional design of deliberative democracy, I turn to Habermas''s ''two-track deliberative politics'' to discuss how to fulfill the ideal of deliberative democracy. After presenting a complete picture of deliberative democracy, I try to respond to the 3 questions raised in chapter 1 while discussing the advantages and disadvantage of deliberative democracy. |
