This thesis focuses on the factors which affect fiber break angle and the end-face surface finishing by using score-and-break method, and a score and break equipment for testing was also developed. At the beginning the important factors affecting end surface quality were collected through a literature survey. The fracture mechanism and the stress conditions for end-face mirror-quality of score-and-break method were researched through theoretical analysis of the fracture mechanics and glass rod breaking experimental results from literatures. Furthermore the crack propagation direction was decided based on mechanics of fracture initiation and propagation theory. Therefore the relationship between applying stress and the fiber break angle can be obtained. In consideration of influential factors of end surface quality through literature survey and theoretical analysis, score-and-break experiments have been done to determine the effects of scored crack and stress conditions, and to find out the optimum score-and-break conditions. The contours of the fiber optic were observed first through a microscope, and then fiber break angle was precisely measured by using a developed interferometer with a vision acquisition and image processing system. In order to confirm parameters derived from experiments, the relationship between crack and stress concentration, the surface pressure of fiber optic while scoring, and the interactions between bending radius and stress on cross section of fiber were analyzed by finite element method. Subsequently these theoretical analytical results were compared with experimental results.
