A Survey Study on Special Educational Competencies of Mild Handicap of Vocational-Industrial High School Teachers in Taipei

The main purpose of the study was to discuss the intention of special education competence and the need of special education further study of vocational-industrial high school teachers. Based on the result, not only could concrete suggestions be proposed for present vocational-industrial high school teachers as reference if they attend any special educational further study, also, it could be used as the guideline when more special education advanced courses were held. The study adopted survey study. The study first conducted a literature analysis to form the necessary theoretical basis for study data collecting, and then to develop the questionnaires for use in vocational-industrial high school teachers in Taipei, which invested the abilities of special education for mild handicapped students. The questionnaires were well revised by professional experts and were used as survey tools. As the subjects of the survey, fifty vocational-industrial high school teachers were conducted pretests of the questionnaires in April, 1999. Three hundred and fifty sampled vocational-industrial high school teachers and special education school teachers were then conducted formal invest in cluster sampling survey in May, 1999. Of all the questionnaires, two hundred and forty-seven valid questionnaires were retrieved, and the rate of the valid retrieval was seventy percent. After statistics analysis, the collected data were analyzed and the study concluded as following: 1. different divided vocational-industrial high school teachers classified into "teacher" and "gender" appeared that, the degree of the teachers'''' need for whole special education were obviously different from each other 2. according to the special education abilities in structures, vocational-industrial high school teachers showed obvious discrepancy, especially in the structure of "the ability of special education work shop intern." 3. among all the divided groups, vocational-industrial high school teachers showed that the following special education abilities were especially in need: "special education school", "female", "with special education experiences", and "over-five-year special education qualification". 4. according to "the need of further study for special education abilities", vocational-industrial high school teachers gave non-homogeneity of proportions on "the most necessary special education ability" and "the need of the direction of special education courses. At the end of the study, it proposed four suggestions according to the study discovery, conclusion, and gains, and the suggestions were expected to be helpful for vocational-industrial special education environment for mild handicapped students.
