The Differences of Horizon between Children and Me: Using TV Cartoons as a Mutual Text Hsiu-Ling Kuo Abstract This study is an autobiographical research. The researcher shared some popular TV cartoons with 12 elementary school students of grade 3 and 4. They discussed the meanings of the characters or contents in the cartoons. Furthermore, the researcher hoped to discover the differences of horizon between those students and she. The researcher as an adult tended to reach children’s horizons and visions; also, to be aware of the differences on perspectives between she and they and her alienation from childhood. The framework of the study contains two circles. The first circle is about continuous reflection and progress in order to press close to children’s world. The second one emphasizes the differences of the ways to view cartoons between children and her. In fact, the second circle is involved in the first one, and they are closely related but not independent. The first circle helps narrowing the horizon, and the second one helps pointing out the research direction. During the process, the researcher encountered some frustrations, however, they could be regarded as the discovery of the study. At the beginning of going into the field, the researcher didn’t know how to lead the children to express their opinions and creativity unrestrainedly. In the end, there’s a big change for the researcher that the children could freely express their ideas. In the last chapter, the researcher reflected over her fading childhood and the gap between the children and she because of different backgrounds. Through the self-reflection, she found out there’s a distance from her childhood, and she could get what children need more precisely when facing children.
