Performance Analysis for Handoffs in Wireless Cellular System Using π-Calculus

A π-calculus analytical model was developed for cellular mobile communications. Using this model, we investigated the performance of different resource reservation schemes for handoffs in cellular systems. High-quality service is an important issue for multimedia applications. In order to guarantee QoS in a wireless environment, we use MRSVP to make resource reservations at locations in which mobile users may visit during the lifetime of the connection. It was found that the higher the mobility ratio, the higher the service miss rate. The greater the number of reserved paths, the smaller the miss rate at the expense of a small amount of resources. The simulation results based on the π-calculus analytical model are close to the Markov Chain analytical model at a low and medium mobility ratio (mobility ratio < 0.6; error < 5%). Moreover, the analytical complexity is lower usingπ-calculus model compared with the Markov Chain model. Thus, theπ-calculus model is suitable as an analytical tool in cellular networks at a non-high mobility ratio.
