Popis: | 88 The ITU-T H.261 is the international standard for videoconferencing and videophone applications. Generally, the computational complexity of a video codec is so high that it is very difficult to realize a real-time video codec without any auxiliary hardware. Somehow, since the processing speed of the modern CPU is becoming faster, a software-based video codec becomes realizable. For the design of a software-based H.261 video codec, the most crucial challenge is that encoding performance has to meet the need of videoconferencing and videophone systems. The main computational complexity of a H.261 codec results from motion estimation; therefore, improving the performance of motion estimation is also the main target of this thesis. In this thesis, a software-based H.261 video codec using various algorithms and programming techniques to accelerate the performance of encoder and decoder is designed and implemented. Furthermore, Intel MMX instruction set is adopted in the implementation to speed up the performance of motion estimation algorithm. The simulation results show that the codec can achieve the performance over 30 fps for CIF video sequence. |
