Comparison of Diversity Combining Techniques in Nakagami Fading Channels

Several methods of diversity combining for Rayleigh-faded and Na-kagami-faded channels are evaluated and compared. The methods consid-ered are, for coherent reception, maximal ratio combining (MRC), selection combining (SC), and generalization of SC, whereby the two (three) signals with the two (three) largest amplitudes are coherently combined. This com-bining strategy is called the second (third) order SC, denoted SC2 (SC3) by Eng[1]. Similar techniques are also investigated for noncoherent reception, with equal gain combining (EGC) replacing MRC, and noncoherent ver-sions of SC2 and SC3. Numerical results indicate that SC2 and SC3 significantly enhance the bit-error rate (BER) performance relative to those achievable with SC, and under certain conditions approaches the performance achieved by MRC or EGC.
