The main purpose of this research is to construct a spatial decision support system for storm sewer systems. This spatial decision support system, composed of geographic information system (GIS) and Illinois least-cost sewer system design model (ILSD-1), provides optimal design technique for storm sewer systems. The main content of optimal storm sewer design assisted by geographic information system is as follows. 1. Develop local cost model for storm sewer systems, including pipe cost, manhole cost, and excavation cost. 2. Construct spatial decision support system for storm sewer systems. With friendly graphic user interface, it helps to save lots of labors and resources for data management. 3. Apply this spatial decision support system not only to evaluate alternatives, but also to display design results and relative spatial data graphically. It has many functions, such as study area examination, 3D ground surface simulation, pipe simulation, display of topographic profile and pipe profile, …etc. 4. Make sensitive analysis about storm frequency, runoff coefficient, detention tank, and design criteria.
