In this dissertation, we investigate the applications of optical amplifiers in fiber-optic video transmission systems and chirped fiber grating based dispersion compensators employed in 10 Gb/s bit rate systems. In amplified fiber-optic video transmission systems, we present a novel linearization technique for increasing the saturation output power and thus improving the saturation-induced nonlinear distortions and input dynamic range of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). Additionally, we demonstrate a 1.3-mm, 100-km transmission system for transporting 77-channel 64-QAM signals using such a linearized MQW SOA. The system demonstration opens up the applications of SOAs in video transmission systems. On the other hand, we also study feasibility of long-distance analog video transmission systems using remotely-pumped erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). From the results of the experiment using locally-pumped EDFAs, we propose a 1.5-mm reliable, remotely-pumped 127-km transmission system with satisfactory performance of transporting 80-channel AM-VSB signals. The remotely-pumped architectures have many applications, such as inter-islands, island hopping, and some intra-city links. In the amplified dispersion compensator, we demonstrate a limiting-amplified chirped fiber grating (CFG) based dispersion compensating scheme for simultaneous dispersion compensation and limiting amplification. The limiting-amplified scheme not only has the high and constant output power, but also relaxes the requirement of reflectivity of CFGs used. We also present its applications in 10 Gb/s dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) transmission systems.
