Popis: | 87 It is clear that Byron has deflated the glorification of epic heroism and revealed from the start of Don Juan the impossibility of finding a real hero worthy of the name in his age. Rather, in the poem he takes great care to represent a number of masculinized heroines, ranging from the austere bluestocking to the active romantic lady of sentiment and the sexually voracious virago. Judging from his satirical discourse, some critics regard Byron as an absolute misogynist, proclaiming his abhorrence of the transgressive women. In fact, Byron exercises a comic war not against female nature but against the excessively expanded heroinism in the feminocentric Regency female-authored novels and the mannish feminists in the society. In a word, Byron attempts to censor the available women stereotypes of his age in order to find a suitable heroine for his own society. In Chapter I, I try to clarify Byron's project by focusing on women characters in his Don Juan. In Chapter II, my concern is to illustrate Byron’s anti-feminist stance on the learned and prudishly moralistic mother figures. In Chapter III, I intend to examine the dilemma and obstacles the erotic heroines confront in their love stories. In Chapter IV, the crossdressing strategy which feminists rely on to make a subversive masculinized heroine possible is questioned. In Chapter V, my conclusion, I suggest the sort of ideal heroine Byron has created for his contemporary society. |
