Popis: | 87 Double Object Constructions in Mandarin Chinese Abstract Double object construction in Mandarin, as in English, is formed by a ditransitive verb with two NP complements following it. According to the grammatical roles of the verbs, we roughly divide them into Beneficiary/Goal type, Source type and Patient type. The direct object is the true object of verb since it can be passivized, relativized and topicalized. The main goal of this thesis is to argue for a causative analysis. We follow Collins and ThraUinsson (1996) and Cheng et al. (1996) and claim that double object construction is a special type of causative construction. However, we don't assume any derivational relationship between these patterns. The causative analysis is also applicable for dative construction. We proposed that the verb may have different decomposition, even though it seems to be like the same morpheme in double object and dative constructions. It was known that in double object construction, indirect object and direct object have possessive relationship. In Mandarin, you 'have' and shuyu 'belong to' is a special kind of alternation (which can be parallel to locative inversion). In other word, the light verb 'HAVE' has an inversion of 'BELONG (to)', and the ditransitive verb in dative sentence should be decomposed as [ x CAUSE z to belong to y]. As for the source/patient type verbs, they act quite different with goal type verbs. Cheng et al. (1996) suggest that the transitive verb combines with direct object to form a complex transitive predicate, and takes indirect object as its outer object. This approach surely can account for the fact that it is indirect object that can be passivized, relativized or topicalized in source/patient double object construction. Therefore it is preferable than the causative analysis propose by Jackendoff (1990). |
