This thesis studies an automatic spectacular polishing system for non-spherical surface. The robotic lapping path is deduced on the non-spherical revolute surface. According to the polishing efficiency, optimal sets of polish parameters are obtained by using the Taguchi Method. The principle of the classical spectacular polishing process is introduction at the beginning. Then the data structure of revolute surfaces are set up form the "IGES"(Initial Graphics Exchanges Specification). A mold with parabolic surface, made from SKD61 steel, is selected as the experimental sample. The curvature of the surface is analyzed to obtain an effective polishing width for the path planning. Base on the polish efficiency, we get the optimal sets of polish parameters from different surface roughness by Taguchi Method. The roughness to efficiency function and the corresponding curves are obtained. Using those polishing curves, the whole spectacular polishing process can be scheduled. The experiment shows that the resulting roughness fall pretty closed to the prediction. It is concluded that using the robot for automatic spectacular polishing is feasible.
