There is a tendency that mountain hiking becomes one of the major outdoor activities in Taiwan. It is important to realize planning and design problems of mountain hiking activity. But, little research to date has attempted to assess the choice behavior of hiking. The purposes of this study were: (1) to understand the factors of choice hiking trails; (2) to explore the relationship between hikers’ characteristics and the difficult levels of hiking trails; (3) to assess the differences of choosing factors among who traveled in specific difficult levels of hiking trails; and (4) to examine how the composition of choosing hiking trails factors effect on specific difficult levels of hiking trails. Three levels of difficulty for hiking trail were categorized to tough, median, and easy. On-site structured questionnaires were surveyed at Daken recreation area. There were 867 usable questionnaires. After using factor analysis to analyze 33 variables, eight factors for choice behavior dimension are generated. These eight factors are: facility management, physical challenge, social interaction, natural resource, objective condition, specific activity, types of companion, sense of silence. T-test, ANOVA, and logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the hypothesized relationships. The findings are summarized as follows: 1. There are significant relationships between visitors’ demographic background and the difficult levels of hiking trails. 2. Visitors who have different demographic backgrounds hold different factors dimensions of choice behavior. 3. Visitors who travel in different difficult levels of hiking trails have different choice behaviors. 4. The composition of choosing hiking trails factors are related to the difficult levels of hiking trails. This study confirms the levels of difficulty for mountain hike do influence choice behavior of visitors. Furthermore, based on these results, this study provides useful information to improve physical conditions of mountain hiking trails.
