Study on the Utilization of Return Flow in Farm Land -Taoyuan Area

During water shortage period, irrigating water is often transferred to other usage by stopping the irrigation of paddy fields or frugal irrigation. The problem of insufficient irrigating water always exists in drought season or in dry areas. However, it is difficult to develop new water resources, such as building of reservoirs or groundwater. Therefore, alternate water source is a way to solve the problem. Return flow is a reliable and economical alternate water source. This research applies accurate observation methods to study the variation of return flow during the period of second rice crop in 1998 to the first rice crop in 1999 in Taoyuan irrigation area. Factors affecting the return flow, such as irrigation water, evapotranspiration, paddy percolation, topography, area and groundwater table, etc, are analysis based on water budget balance. The return flow curve is developed using the observation results and related influencing factors. Under the condition of topography of 1/150, sandy loam, paddy percolation of 4.71 mm/day, the ratio of return to irrigation water, Y, is where X is irrigation water / (evapotranspiration + paddy percolation). According to the preliminary study result of this research, return flow can be predicted based on irrigation water, evapotranspiration, paddy percolation if a series of relations between different topography and soil can be established.
