The physical and mentally health assessment of Tai-Chi Chuan exercise program for the country elderly

Popis: | 87 英 文 摘 要 This study is applied by Quasi-experimental design. In order to explore the potential contribution of Tai-Chi Chuan exercise to the elderly people in the countryside in view of exercise physiology (physiological function, body sway, body flexibility, and functional reach), attitude about exercise, and exercise psychology (social support, conscious health condition, and life satisfaction). The effects were assessed with instrumental measurement and structuralism questionnaires. The subjects included community elderly in Guei-Shan area of Taoyuan County, Taiwan. Which are divided by all the residents in two villages similar in demographic background; into the experimental group, three months of Tai-Chi Chuan exercise was given, and in the control group, encouragement of their previous exercise habits was given over telephone. Data were collected and analyzed before and after the program intervention. The data were analyzed with SPSS/Window software, and the results were found as follows: 1.Among the correlation of exercise physiology, attitude about exercise and exercise psychology, the experimental group revealed decreasing body sway and life satisfaction for more elderly persons; in the control group, the functional reach impairment was more significant for more elderly and male persons. 2.In matter of the rating of the questionnaire, the attitude about exercise rank the highest rank, which implied the positive attitude in exercise among the study subjects, and revealed the viewpoint that exercise to improve health condition was their major concern and helpful. 3.In the study subjects, the elderly persons were more satisfied with the present life, more adapted to old age, and identified the meaningfulness in life in condition that their spouses were alive and their offspring lived together with them. 4.The family members, relatives, friends and health professionals offered emotional concern and positive attitude in exercise, but lacked support of the means of transportation and the necessary instruments in exercise. 5.The experimental group showed a significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure and respiration rate, with no change in exercise physiology in control group. 6.Body sway, flexibility of trunk, and functional reach improved in experimental group, but no significant change was noted. 7.Subjects in both groups showed significant change in attitude about exercise after the intervention (participation in Tai-Chi Chuan or telephone follow-up), while the experimental group are significantly better than control group. 8.Social support in exercise improved in both groups significantly, and more prominently in control group. 9.Conscious-health condition didn’t change significantly in and between groups before and after intervention, but the scores were higher after intervention. 10.Life satisfaction didn’t change significantly in and between groups before and after intervention, but the scores were higher after intervention.
