This thesis has two objectives. One is to develop a sensorless speed controller for permanent magnet synchronous motor drives based on the extended Kalman filter and pole-placement. The other is to develop an adaptive pole-placement speed controller based on the recursive least square estimation. For the good state estimation ability of extended Kalman filter, it is adopted to estimate rotor electrical frequency for sensorless feedback by measuring stator current signals and voltage commands. Otherwise, due to the good ability of estimating constant or slowly varying parameters for recursive last square estimation, it is adopted to estimate resistance and inductance of motor parameters by measuring stator current and voltage signals. Then, parameters of pole-placement speed controller with estimated resistance and inductance are adapted to reduce the effect of varying motor parameters. Simulation and experimental results are presented to confirm the ability of design for sensorless speed controller for permanent magnet synchronous motor drive. Besides, simulation results of adaptive pole-placement speed controller show the better adaptive ability.
