The thesis is focused on Ronald Harwood's _Another Time_ (1989), amelanch oly play that echoes the deepest longing in the individual in search of self-i dentity and self-realization. It is divided into two parts: aCritical Introdu ction and a Chinese Translation. The Introduction discusses several aspect s of the play: its autobiographical elements, its presumable parallels with Sh akespeare's _Julius Caesar_ and T. S. Eliot's _Four Quartets_, its metaphors, the thematicsignificance of Rachmaninoff's life and music, and, above all, a u nique conceptof time dramatized in the play. Through these discussions may be discoveredthe protagonist's cause of discontent, his journey in search of ide ntity, andthe psychological impact of a "recapitulation" of a past on him. It is arguedthat the end of the journey, while it may resolve part of the protag onist's sorrow in his quest of unity, also implies the beginning of another jo urney, to be anticipated some time in the artist's life or in the coming gener ations. The Translation attempts to capture the full flavor of the original, in cludingits colloquialism. A section on the translation problems is provided.
