The objective of the proposed research is to develop an optimal maintenance and/or repair policies (OMP) for improving the availability of multistage production systems. Specifically, a mathematical model will be developed to determine the optimal size of maintenance/repair crew and the spare allocation as well as the optimal interval of preventive maintenance. The criteria to be considered include the availability of production systems and the cost incurred by maintenance/repair and the unavailability of the system. To develop an OMP it is necessary to specify the equipment failure process, the maintenance policy and process, and the repair process. The equipment failure and repair process describes the probability laws governing failures and repair times, respectively. The most widely accepted failure and repair distributions are Exponential and Weibull distributions which are adopted in the proposed research. The maintenance activities include "scheduled" check up, adjustment, and replacement of deteriorating components, while repair is called upon when equipment failures occur. In this research, we propose a systematic procedure to determine the optimal maintenance policies for a multistage production system subject to Exponential and Weibull failures. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is also performed on various combinations of cost ratio as well as the effect of different allocation of repair crew and spares on the system reliability and availability. Two numerical examples are also given to explain and demonstrate the practical application of the proposed procedure for determining the OMP of a three-stage production system.
