Studies on the Physical, Gluing and Coating Properties of Wood by Acetylation

The objective of this study was to investigate the three wood species ( china fir, red lauan, red oak ) which were reacted separately with acetic anhydride. After the treatment, the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of the treated woods were determined. The gluing properties of acetylated wood were determined by using of different adhesives. The adhesives included:resorcinol - formaldehyde resin ( RF ), polyurethane ( PU ) and epoxy resin ( Epoxy ) were prepared in our laboratory. The Water absorption, volumetric swelling, hygroscopicity weight and hygroscopicity swelling for acetylated woods were lower than control woods .The hardness of the three woods for acetylated treatments were raised, then MOE and MOR were reduced but MOR of red lauan was raised. The contact angle of acetylated woods was larger than control woods. The bonding strength at dry and the wood failure of RF and PVAc adhesives for china fir of acetylated woods were better, the bonding strength at wet of RF adhesives was better.
