Calcium aluminate oxide glasses are transparent over wavelengths ranging from the near UV (0.2μm) to the mid-IR (5~6μm). They are excellent infrared transmitting materials. In this paper, influence of water on the physical properties, including density, index of refraction, and sound velocities, of six calcium aluminate oxide glasses were studied by IR absorption and ultrasonic pulse-echo measurements. In the IR spectra, a OH group related absorption peak around 3440cm-1 was observed and was developed as time went on. The derived values of the elastic constant are larger than that of Si02 glass. Possible explanations responsible for the experimental observation will be discussed in the light of existing theories.
