Both Oxford and Cambridge Universities are ancient and traditional universities in the United Kingdom, the former with a history of more than eight-hundred years and the latter of more than seven-hundred years. The rich humanism of Oxford and Cambridge Universities is not only the model of global universities, but is also the one that a great number of foreign students want to be nurtured at. Both universities emphasize a gentleman''s education and the close relations between Dons and students; besides, theyattach importance to the personal touch that Dons give their students. Therefore, these traits make Oxbridge Universities students famous for their gentility. But, those very long-lived systems, the envy and model of many foreigners, have been meeting the challenge these years yet. After becoming the Prime Minister of Britain in 1979, Thatcher began to make lots of educational reform in order to change the educational contents of Oxbridge Universities. In the past, both universities looked down on the sciences or even despired technology and vocational education. Thatcher wanted to increase the importance of the sciences, technology and vocational education. There are six chapters in this thesis:(1) The purposes, focus, approcahes and limitations of the study.(2) The origins of Oxford and Cambridge Universities; the relations between Oxbridge Univeristies, the English government and churches.(3) The matriculation system, matriculation requirements and the curricula & degrees at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.(4) The rise and history of the Collegiate and Tutorial Systems, and the educational spirits and traits at Oxbridge Universities.(5) The origin and contents of Thatcherism, the education policy of Thatcher, and the relations between Oxbridge Universities and the Conservative government.(6) The influence on Oxford and Cambridge Universities of recent educational reform in higher educaiton (especially Education Reform Act 1988 & Further and Higher Education Act 1992).
