A Study of Relationship Between the Physical Environment and Children's Social Play in Playgrounds

Environment,cognition and behavior exist in an interdependent. The qualityof the playground may influence the psychology and characteristics of children. It is clear that a long period of time under the influence of such an essentialformative environment will have a marked effect on the personality andcharacteristics of the children. Therefore,it is necessary to encourage children''s social interaction,so their ability to adapt to the society in thefuture can be enhanced. This research is done with the concept of environmental psychology.Non-participative time samplingand structured observation methods were used to study children''s social play. Also,the Likert Scale was used to build the knowledge of the studied children''senvironment cognition of playgrounds and to discuss the relationship between the environment and children''s social play with the purpose of of distinguishingdifferent types of playgrounds and discussing the varieties amoung the groups. The following are the results of the investigation of 10 researched.1.Through children''s environmental cognition of the playgrounds,we divided the playgroundsinto 5 groups : (1)complex design;(2)traditional design;(3)equipment-orienteddesign;(4) ordinary design;(5)social interaction-oriented design.2.Among the discussed factors of the physical environment of the 5 groups of playgrounds,we found the equipment-oriented factor can be recognized more by children than the factor of space.3.An area with visual interruption can be a significant factor influencingchildren''s attendance in playgrounds.4.More connected playground facilities do increase the amount of children'' sindividual activities but decrease their social interaction with others.5.In this research,we found that the presence of adult companions is one ofthe interrupting factors affecting children''s social interaction.As to thereason for such interruptions, our observations led to the parents'' concernof their children''s safety.
