The researching aspect of theis thesis is to study the connotative meaning of "rescue" as motif in plots and symbol in fairy tales of the Grimm Brothers with the "narrative function" concept of Vladimir J. Propp. There are six chapters in this thesis. In the first chapter, it gives an outline of the researching motivation, thegoal and the methods of thhis thesis. In the second chapter, it is a description of the developing background ofthe fairy tales collected by the Grimm Brothers and the biography of themselves. In the third chapter, it sketches out the general symbols and their connotative meanings in fairy tales, and meanwhile puts the main emphasison the symbolic meanings of characteristic types, numbers, magic and placesin firy tales. IN addition, it also makes clear of symbolic meaning of the plot of "rescue" in fairy tales out of the symbolism of magic, which oftencauses the development of rescue in fairy tales.Besides, it divides the developing motif of "rescue" from the fairy tales of the Grimm Brothers into seven categories in this chapter. In the fourth chapter, it decipts the theory of "narrative function" concept, which is asserted by a Russian scholar V.J.Propp(1895-1970), so asto be a theoretical structure for analyzing one of fairy tales of the Grimm Brothers in chapter five. His method of analyzing fairy tales differs from the ways used before. Propp defines "an act of a character and its significance for thhe course of action" as a term "function". From analyzingone hundred Russian fairy tales induces Propp thirty-one "fuctions", which must be always occuried in the tales(however, not all thirty-one functionsappear at the same time in one tale), and gives each function a cleardelineation, a brief definition and a conventional signal. The fifth chapter is actually putting the Propp''s method into practice, thatis, analyzing one of fairy tales of the Grimm Brothers with his "function"concept. Here the selection is the ninth tale "The twelve brothers" as a representation. The "rescue-action" of this tale belongs to the seventh category, namely, the action of rescue is between brothers and sisters. From the analytical process comes to the conclusion that, although the sequence of functions is not always the same as what Propp had been found out, but this situation does not disturb the logical and reasonable essenceof the tales. Propp''s method is just as what he had been said:..., the talesof the Brothers Grimm, presenting the same scheme in general, display a less pure and stable form of it."(V.J.Propp: Morphology of the folktale, p.100)Furthermore, from the tale "the twelve brothers" we can also find out the bright traces of symbols in this tale, which are already described in chapter three, such as the symbolic meaning of magic, colour and the action of rescue. In the sixth chapter, it makes an arragenment for the analytical results in chapter five, and makes sure that, the denouementof the rescue-action in thetale provides readers a felling of roundness. Such ending is the main reason why fairy tales are read widely by people again and again and go from generation to generation.
