This study investigates the composition of odorous materials, their spatial distributions, and their variations with time in the Lin-Yuan petrochemical park. The odorous gas is investigated both quantitatively and qualitatively by the GC/ MS. With the knowledge of the constitution of the odorous gas, we can estimate the " odor contributions " to the ambient air of key odorous compounds. In order to decide the odor monitoring sites, the simulation using ISCST3 model is performed using estimated emissions data of the main odorous materials. The chemical analysis of the odorous gas indicate that the happened odor events are accomplished by the dominate contribution from single compound far exceeding its counterparts from other species. The major odor materials include acetic acid, ethyl acrylate, styrene and cumene. However, the relationship between chemical concentration of the odorous compound and its odor concentration is not clear. By using ISCST3 model to simulate the dispersion of the main odorous compounds, we find that the odorous compounds disperse northeastward and southwestward from the emission sources. The phenomenon are caused by the local sea-land breeze. We count the hours in which the concentrations of main odorous compounds are higher than their odor thresholds, then choose the grids with larger happening probability. Therefore, the selected sites can be used in the future monitoring system to detect the majority of cases with odorous concentrations possibly to cause nuisance events.
