This study examines the effect of coal fly ash and incineration fly ash on environment by means of batch and column leaching tests and establishes a mathematical model to predict quantity and quality from column leaching tests with fly ash layer of different ages.In one-layer column test, the concentration of chromium, molybdenum, boron, sodium and magnesium in coal fly ash leachate and lead, zinc, copper, sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride in incineration fly ash leachate decrease sharply at the beginning of the leaching test. However, sulfate in incineration fly ash leachate change gradually. In multi-layer column test, after packing fresh fly ash, the concentration of pollutants in leachate increase sharply. The concentration of lead, chromium, chloride and sulfate are found in excess of water-quality standards. At early stage of column test, copper and zinc are also found in excess of the standards. However, packed fresh fly ash, zinc is found in excess of the standards. The leachable fraction of molybdenum, sodium, magnesium and calcium from coal fly ash are 40%, 3%, 18% and 7% for column test and 54%, 4%, 27% and 8% for batch test, respectively. It is possible to predict the accumulative amount of molybdenum, boron, calcium and sulfate in column test by batch test.Good agreement between model simulation and experimental data of laboratory column tests was obtained. The important parameters : kn、n、M0、Cmax influence the physicochemical reaction and transport of leachate from fly ash.
