The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a more efficient data processing technique for single and joint inversion of the DC and CSAMT sounding data. The following studies are included: 1. Modified CSAMT one-dimensional inversion program that is included in part of one-dimensional joint inversion program of the DC and CSAMT data is based on Zohdy''s automatic interpretation idea. It is easy to handle the initial inversion model and to improve the resolution of layered earth structures. 2. Two-dimensional joint inversion of the DC and CSAMT method algorithm based on finite element method. During the inversion, It''s quite easier to incorporate the topographic effect together. The newly developed two-dimensional joint inversion program for the data collected at Peikang, Chungli, and Pingtung sites. Qualitative and quantitative studies of those data can give the following conclusions: a) There are no obvious lateral discontinuities of resistivity layers under the survey line at Peikang site. The first boundary at depth around 690m is the contact between the Toukoushan Formation of Pleistocence age and the Choulan Formation of Pliocene age. The second discontinuity depth around 1396m is referred to the boundary of the formation of Middle Miocene age and the formation of earlier age. b) It is suggested to interpret the step-like ground surface to be the end product of terrace at Chungli site. The top layer, with a thickness about 5m, is laterite. The second gravel layer has a thickness around 10m. The boundary of the Toukoushan Formation and the Choulan Formation is located at the depth around 700m. c) The west flank of the Pingtung syncline is located under the survey line at Pingtung site. 3. These joint inversion programs are designed not only for DC and/or CSAMT sounding data, it can be extended to set another modular inversion program together to do the joint inversion schemes in the future.
