Studies on the Synthesis and Properties of Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Poly(imide-ester)s

Two parts of semi-aromatic thermotropic liquid crystalline poly( imide-ester)s were synthesized by the direct polyconden- sation in this study. In the first part, poly(imide-ester)s were polymerized from N - (4-carboxyphenyl trimellitimide) (M1) with three various diimide diols containing methylene spacer= 2 ~6 (A1-n、A2-n、A3-n), respectively. It is found that the M1- A1-n polymers with even methylene spacer (n=4, 6) having linear structure exhibits LC phase,but the M1-A2-n and M1-A3-n polym- ers does not appear LC phase. The effect of the amount of LiCl and pyridine on the thermal properties and viscosity of the polymers in the direct polycondensation were also studied. In the second part of this study,the poly(imide-ester)s were poly- merized from N,N'-di(ω-carboxyalkyl) biphthalic diimide (B1-m) containing methylene spacer = 2, 3, 10 with various diol, such as phenyl hydroquinone (PhHQ)、 biphenyldiol (BP) and so on, espectively. It is found that the polymers B1-2-BPO with shorter methylene spacers ( m = 3) exhibits nematic phase, and polymer with longer methylene acers(m = 10) exhibits smectic.
