The content of my thesis focues on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles using an electrochemical oxidation/redution method with the aid of surfactants, which from micelles in electrolytic solution. The UV-Visible absorption measurements assist our study of size-dependent optical responseof these nanoparticles and to reveal the growth of nanoparticles during andafter the sythesis. Meanwhile, the size distributions and the shapes of the nanoparticles were determined by a high resolution transmission electronmicroscopy(HRTEM).The silver particle system serves as the basis for us to optimize the electrochemical sythesis by varying serveral experimentalparameters, such as current density, synthesis time, type of the surfactant, water content and temperature. Our systematic studies have shown a promissingroute to produce metallic nanoparticles with narrow size distribution. Basedon the results we also propose a model for the growth mechanism of metallicnanoparticles.
